BMW History

BMW, short for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is a German multinational corporation that produces luxury vehicles and motorcycles. The company was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines, which were used extensively by the German military during World War I. After the war ended, BMW was prohibited from producing aircraft engines by the Treaty of Versailles, so the company shifted its focus to producing motorcycles.

In the 1920s, BMW began producing automobiles, starting with the BMW 3/15, which was essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7. In the 1930s, BMW began producing a range of sports cars, including the 328, which became famous for its success in motorsports.

During World War II, BMW once again produced aircraft engines for the German military, including the famous BMW 801 radial engine that powered the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter plane. After the war ended, BMW was banned from producing aircraft engines and was forced to focus on producing motorcycles and automobiles.
